What We Do
Internationella Engelska Skolan has a long and wide experience in education, now in its 21st year as a school provider in Sweden. We have developed and tested practices and policies for transforming our core convictions into reality. Here are a few:
Command of the English language – Up to 50 per cent of teaching is in English, mainly performed by native English-speaking teachers. English is the staff language in corridors and classrooms. Other modern languages, like Spanish, are also mainly taught by native teachers. An international atmosphere is promoted in our schools. The diversity of the teaching staff strongly supports the international character of our schools. IES promotes full bilingualism – skills in the Swedish language are fully upheld as well as in English.
A safe and orderly school environment, in which teachers can teach and students learn – We have a “Code of conduct”, to be signed by parents and students. The principal is to be present, visible and alert on a daily basis. Students line up punctually outside their classrooms for lessons. Good classroom management is applied. Graffiti is not tolerated anywhere and floors are kept garbage free. Good manners are applied; “Yes, please”, “No, thank you”. Staff members dress in a professional manner. Any bullying is acted upon with the highest degree of urgency. School toilets are kept fresh and clean. Staff are addressed by titles, Mr/Ms/Dr and last name. There is an effective student care team. The principal meets regularly with the student council and listens attentively to its views on how the school lives up to its promises. The PTA (Parent/Teacher Association) provides extra support for the school. Annual questionnaires to students and parents give added information to the principal and IES on matters to improve. It is emphasized that school is a workplace. Pride in a clean and well-functioning school is promoted.
High academic expectations and aspirations – Lessons start on time and are used fully, without disturbance. The working memory of each student must be able to focus on the tasks at hand. Staff keep close watch over the attendance of students and patterns of absence. Every student has a mentor teacher. Mentors call home or meet with parents at least once a month. Extra support classes are offered for one hour a week, at a minimum, in every subject. Quick evaluations and feedback on learning are to be applied, for example via simple diagnostic tests after a subject unit, in order for no child to be left behind. Academic Notice systems are used to communicate weak achievement/lack of progress. Homework is given regularly. Parents are kept informed about the curriculum for each term and year, as well as school year calendars and test schedules; support from parents is to be encouraged. Excellent, nutritious school lunches are served to students and staff. Teachers share their extra-curricular interests and are expected to provide one such activity a week. Mentors meet with parents and students once a term, with an academic status report given in advance.
